Taylor tabb

I’m a researcher and creative director working at the intersection of computing, materials, and storytelling. I lead SPAK!, a creative technology studio building first-of-their-kind products, experiments, and experiences.

I’ve taught and co-created Wild Ways of Making at Stanford d.school, serve on the board of TIAT, and co-founded Fidget Camp — all endeavors rooted in craft, art, and technology in San Francisco. Plus, If you watch baking shows, you may have seen me baking and building on Netflix’s Baking Impossible.

Academically, I’m a Mechanical engineer and Human-Computer Interaction researcher. Though I rarely wear my MechE hat these days, I was an early member of Lining Yao’s Morphing Matter Lab at Carnegie Mellon University, and led a small program at Accenture Labs publishing on edible data storage, wearable electronics, and neuromorphic computing.

Lately I’m very interested in: novel materials, spatial UI, play/whimsy in hardware, new/alternative fabrication techniques, speculative products, alternative sensing, "weird" manufacturing processes, material culture (i.e. the nature of materiality), and love to chat with like minds.
